Overview:
Three-panel surgical binders (9" height) provide support and compression to abdominal muscles weakened by strain without restricting breathing or muscle redevelopment. An abdominal strain is defined as a mild injury to the abdominal muscles resulting from trauma, overuse, pregnancy, inactivity, or surgeries such as cesarean, liposuction or hysterectomy. Abdominal binders enhance compliance following open abdominal surgical procedures and can help prevent sedentary complications such as pneumonia. Wearing a binder encourages ambulation earlier and allows for more comfortable and controlled breathing.

Indications

Weakened abdominal muscles as a result of:

  • Strain
  • Overuse
  • Pregnancy
  • Inactivity
  • Surgeries such as cesarean, liposuction, or hysterectomy

Comfort Benefits:

  • Three-panel, nine inch high elastic binder.
  • Latex-free woven elastic to accommodate those with latex sensitivities.
  • Soft plush liner is comfortable against the skin.
  • Hook compatible outer for an infinite amount of adjustability and long lasting wear.
  • Unique "hinged" stitch attaches panels. Allows for more flexibility and a more conforming fit without pinching the skin.
  • Woven elastic can be cut without unraveling to accommodate drainage tubes.

Features

The material is plus on the inside against the skin and hook-compatible on the outside for a wide range of adjustability. This material can be engaged and disengaged for a number of cycles. The "fuzzy" exterior actually helps improve the holding power.

The individual panels are attached by a unique "hinged" stitch. This allows the binder more flexibility and a more conforming fit. This "hinged" stitch also prevents pinching from occurring where the panels are attached.

The binder can be worn inconspicuously under clothing, providing comfortable support.

The unique new abdominal binder is made from latex-free woven elastic. The all-elastic construction produces maximum compression and allows for conformity to different patient shapes for an improved fit.

The three-panel model is to be used for average patients, while the four-panel model can be used for taller patients o those experiencing long-line surgery.

The true woven elastic provides consistent and firm compression. This unique material can be cut without unraveling, making it especially beneficial when used with drainage tubes.

The all-hook compatible outer allows for a conforming fit for patients of all shapes and sizes. A tapered fit can be achieved, allowing the patient to have the appropriate compression applied where necessary.

The Uniqueness of the Material Allows These Binders to be Used with Drainage Tubes

Many patients using drainage tubes may also need the support and compression provided by abdominal binders. Apply the binder using extreme care to prevent discomfort to the patient and possible irritation to the wound site. To prevent the drainage tube from shifting or leaking, it is recommended that surgical sponges be placed on either side of the tube at the surgical site.

In order to accommodate a Penrose-type drainage tube, a hole can be easily cut in the binder. Ensure that there is only a single layer of the binder placed over the drainage site. To make sure the binder is placed properly, mark on the fabric where the tube will be. Once this mark is made, while creasing the fabric, cut an elliptical shape. This shape will then be a round hole in the material when stretched. The length of the cut will determine the diameter of the hold.

Once the cut has been made, there may be some loose threads. These should be removed from the area where the cut was made. Remember, this material will not unravel or tear once it has been cut.

Individual Application:

1. Apply in a standing or laying position.
2. Open binder to its fullest length with the care tag on the inside and hook on the right side forming a V-shape in the back. Center the height of the abdominal binder at the navel with seam centered in the back.
3. Stretch both sides and wrap the side without the hook around the body first.
4. Secure the hook onto the support where needed.
5. Adjust as necessary.

Caregiver Application

1. With patient lying flat on his/her back in bed, open the binder to its fullest length, positioning it underneath the patient with the plush side against the patient's skin.

2. Center the height of the abdominal binder at the navel with the seam centered in the back. The hook should be on the right side of the patient.

3. Stretch the left side of the binder and pull it across the patient's ribs/abdomen, using the weight of the patient to hold it in place. 4. Holding the left side in place on the patient's ribs/abdomen, stretch the right side the same way securing to the loop. 5. Adjust as necessary.

Care Instructions:

Fasten closure and hand wash in cold water with mild soap. Wrap in a towel to remove excess water (do not twist or wring). Air dry away from heat. Do not tumble dry. Do not bleach.

Sizing:

Measure around the fullest part of the abdomen.
